Polo tuition Buenos Aires, stick and ball practice Buenos Aires and chukkas Buenos Aires – are not all created equal!

If you already play polo in Buenos Aires, you will know this.

If you are lucky enough to read my various blogs and articles about playing polo in Buenos Aires, you may already have been lucky enough to get my personal recommendation to my own ‘Aston Martin’ on the Buenos Aires polo scene.

The Giannico family is a working polo family based at Santa Maria de Lobos Polo Ranch. The most beautiful polo club in Buenos Aires; the scenery is incredible, the club has the Culu Culu lagoon and nature reserve as its natural boundary.

Polo is hard graft and to play polo professionally, teach polo and breed the highest quality polo ponies is a 24/7 vocation.

If you are new to polo or a tourist who aspires to play polo whilst visiting Buenos Aires, ask yourself, do you want to ‘test drive a Ford Motor Car or an Aston Martin’?

I am serious, it is so very important that experienced polo players and the new enthusiasts alike, can compete with the best and find polo tuition from professional polo players who provide quality polo ponies and safe equipment.

Going back to my earlier analogy, it is the difference between choosing a run-about from the Ford Motor Company or a high performance Aston Martin.

Polo is not a cheap sport, but polo is more reasonably priced in Argentina, as opposed to Great Britain or the United States of America.

Cheaper polo and so-called polo tours in Buenos Aires, is so often about mediocre local club players, poor quality polo nags, poor equipment and poorer tuition, which fall too short of assuring both your safety and enjoyment.

Like the tango, Buenos Aires is the home of professional polo playing, but it’s actually quite difficult to find high quality stick and ball practice and chukkas with three to five goal professionals and high quality polo ponies. So please, when considering polo, take your time and conduct your research or you may be wasting your money.

Believe me when I say, it’s even more difficult is to find reliable and well organized polo people in a first class club that delivers the highest quality service at a fixed price.

If you are new to polo in Buenos Aires – you need quality polo school / clinic or tuition; you need high quality and safe equipment; you need quality polo ponies; and, you need an experienced well-run polo club with excellent polo fields and facilities – you should start out your Buenos Aires polo experience with the best of the best.

You may find that some clubs or polo schools / clinics charge for each of the components mentioned above, so make sure that you ask for the final price for accommodation and polo, so you can compare apples with apples.

I have found that there are always extras to pay at most clubs, it’s bloody annoying and dare I say it, my experience in Argentina has taught me that there is always someone trying to chisel a few extra bucks.

The Giannico family (in my modest opinion) gets it 99% right where most clubs get it quite wrong.

Alfonso Giannico and his family make getting right their business and your days spent on the greens will seem almost effortless and well organized – polo with Alfonso and his boys is a lot of fun.

Why is polo with the Giannico family different?

I believe the Giannico family have strong values and their merging of two cultures – United States (formidable polo mum) Cindy Giannico meets Argentina (formidable professional polo playing dad) Alfonso Giannico and their two sons Sterling (18) and Remington (20), who both play a mean three goal game of polo – has given them the edge, the boys are about hard work ethic and mum, well she looks after everyone and her eye for detail and American consciousness for service gives them a well-earned edge over the competition.

Two generations of polo players in one family team with mum always on the sideline looking after everyone means that young or old, you will find camaraderie, learn great polo from some of the best and everyone tends to fit into their group somewhere.

The Giannico’s are truly happy playing polo on the international circuit or teaching new enthusiasts who might never have even sat on a horse, let alone a polo pony!

Meet an atypical polo family in Buenos Aires!

Alfonso Rubén Giannico

Alfonso Giannico is a former five-goal professional polo player and present day instructor/consultant with 30 years of experience within the sport. Alfonso Giannico has worked amongst some of the most successful of his time particularly past time ten-goaler Daniel Gonzalez, and 1993 US Open Polo Patron: Ambassador Glen Holden. His current Polo operation is located in Santa María de Lobos, South Buenos Aires most exclusive polo ranch located only 100km from the city of Buenos Aires where he teaches clinics and private lessons. Alfonso also shares a passion for the equine side of the sport and this year has started an embryonic breeding program. When it comes to instructing and consulting for polo, Alfonso is a natural thanks to his enormous amount of patience, precision and instinctive experience with horses. His advice is simply a premium.

Cynthia Giannico

Cynthia, Alfonso’s wife is a loving polo mother who has been on the sideline since the day they met. She is the mother of two successful polo players: Remington & Sterling who are both currently rated at three goals. She is the ideal mother to have at the side of your children’s games while one is out doing other things. Cynthia makes sure they’ve been fed lunch, have the appropriate safety gear on, and in case of any emergencies to have someone to rely on. In addition, she also understands that being the other half of a relationship with a polo player can be a little lonely at times – Cynthia entertains non-polo-playing guests with lunch, shopping trips, tours of Buenos Aires city and of course, there’s always time to stop for a nice glass of white wine.

Sterling Giannico

Sterling has been naturally inclined to polo since he was a toddler and has traveled all over the world thanks playing tournaments throughout his formative years. Currently rated at three goals when it comes to the most prestigious youth tournaments in Argentina, he’s won them all; he has played in Palermo, or in the official Association Polo Club. He’s played in Europe and some of the most exotic countries as Dubai. Thrilling, speed driven games are just a practice for young Sterling and he is a great mix for teaching youth polo.

Remington Giannico

His first time on a polo pony was thanks to his father taking him on his first ride at two weeks of age. Polo has surrounded Remington his whole life. And thanks to this luxurious sport, Remington has so far been able to achieve a three-goal polo handicap and also had the chance to play in some of the most prestigious playing grounds in Argentina such as Palermo at side his dad’s side. Before moving full time to Argentina, Remington has represented the USA in youth tournaments in United Kingdom, such as Hurtwood, South Dourset, Frampton, and Tonton.

Campo Weekend Buenos Aires

Paradise in Lobos, Buenos Aires, Argentina

I have spent many years in and around the travel industry, thus have been fortunate enough to have travelled, enjoyed, and explored many places, in many countries off the beaten path.

I’ve even found a few extraordinary, unusual, unique, exotic, relaxing, exhilarating, and rejuvenating as my last campo weekend in Buenos Aires Province. Never had I found one place that was all of them, until a few weekends ago at Casa de Lord, in Lobos, Buenos Aires, Argentina. I wouldn´t have bet on this one in a million years!

Upon arrival, after only a 90 minute drive from midtown Buenos Aires, passing through the surprisingly contemporary and fashionable town of Lobos, to the gates of Santa Maria de Lobos Polo Ranch, and onto its private roads leading to the Casa de Lord. Through the evening darkness we suddenly saw a fury of lights, like a beacon beckoning us. We proceeded toward the lighted, palm tree lined, private drive way to the arched, and covered driveway entrance of the home. I couldn´t help but hear the theme music to the old TV program, DALLAS in the back of my head!

The house, a distinctly styled colonial villa that is designed in such a way that it does not feel like the typical, sprawling house. Its two levels give it a real feel of a home despite its opulent yet not ostentatious decor. The leather furniture, rich wood floors and walls blend well with the huge center of the living room open fireplace, (already lit and burning thanks to the property´s full time casero).

Perhaps part of the relaxing and comfortable sensation is given by the near floor-to-ceiling extra large windows throughout the home, giving an obstructed view to the endless flat green lands of the surrounding polo camp. To borrow the quote of Frank Borman, the former astronaut, as he neared the moon while on his way there in space, it is ¨splendid desolation¨. Total tranquility is the only way to describe what I experienced for the entire ‘Campo weekend Buenos Aires’, which is not a state of being this native New Yorker is at all accustomed to.

The home itself contains every creature comfort imaginable from two home theaters, one in the living room, and one in the below ground bar/disco/wine cellar, a nearly decadent hydro-spa in the master bedroom complex, as well as an outdoor pool with fountains and hydro spa, adjacent to its own cabana with showers and changing facilities. The kitchen, and yes, I do cook and enjoy it, was magnificent with every imaginable setting, tool, and utensil needed to, well, get serious about making and enjoying a meal, whether you chose to dine on one of the various patios, or internal terraces, or indoors in the formal dining room, or simply at the family table in a truly down home kitchen setting, reminiscent of those days of eating with the family all too many years back.

In expressing my gratitude to the home´s owner, even as a paying guest, Lord Alain Levenfiche, I could only associate the home and its surroundings, and even the town of Lobos, with its small cafes and night spots, as well as designer shops, with the Maui (Hawaii) of 30 years ago that I so loved and enjoyed, (minus the Pacific Ocean, of course) endearing itself to my heart, before the sprawl of development that has consumed its character and tranquility.

This home is indeed a treasure. Surely it is a commercial venture, but it was designed, obviously for it to be a ¨home¨ to those who visit, while they are there. I know that eventually the area will develop and commercialize more, not to the extent of, but in a similar fashion to my beloved Maui. However, this home, I do not believe will ever lose its charm and its grasp on you once you see it and experience it.

We tend to think in terms of people owning real estate. Casa de Lord is a piece of real estate that takes ownership of a person. It simply consumes you in the best of ways. My two-and-a-half days there left me feeling as if I had spent a two week vacation there. Then came Monday….when can I make my next campo weekend in Buenos Aires….I need to go back!

SUNDAY 25th of September

I suggest you take the train to Tigre from Retiro Station. Once you arrive, exit the station and cross the square towards the port. Here you will find ferries to the islands as well as a selection of options.

Be it kayaks, wakeboard, restaurants, hotels, camping, Tigre has it.

So time to get in shape, pack a bathing suit and head for the islands.

CASA FOA 2011

DESIGN AND DECORATION IN BUENOS AIRES

September 9th to October 10th of 2011

Every year since 1985, CASA FOA chooses an emblematic building with the objective of recovering it for the city. They choose a rundown building and they restore it fully to open its doors to the best designers and decorators Argentina has to offer. This fair has been held in abandoned factories, colonial mansions, wharehouses, horse tracks and all kinds of old architecture destined for demolition.

Thanks to CASA FOA this buildings have revived and assured their existence in our beautiful BA.

CASA FOA is an NGO started by Mercedes Malbran de Campos with the objective of raising funds for the “Jorge Malbran Argentine Ophthalmologic Foundation” created in 1964.They are in charge of the awareness program called “Para Verte Mejor Argentina” (to see you better Argentina).

This year for the third time around the south of the city was chosen for the site, in the traditional and up and coming Barracas neighbourhood. (not to be confused with Barracas de Belgrano). This barrio is west of La Boca, between Constitucion Train Station and the Riachuelo, natural border of La

Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires (BA´s official name) and the province of Buenos Aires (capital La Plata, the city of diagonals) the lucky winner this year for their fresh restoration was the old Fish Market of the City, which is currently the Municipal Centre of Design. More than fifty spaces dedicated to design, decor, and architecture and landscaping distributed in this magnificent 7700 square meter industrial market like structure. This initiative’s aim is to create a Design District in this neighbourhood to host the local talent graduated from our open and free State Universities as well as private Institutions and Foreign academies.

The theme is always innovation and protagonist. A space was provided to the winner of the yearly scholarship given to designers and architects from the interior of the province. Unfortunately Argentina is very centralized and everything must go by Buenos Aires, be it planes, trains, roads and yes, talent. We have a saying in Argentina that says:” God is Argentinean but his office is in Buenos Aires”! All trash cans and benches have been the result of the contests “Tira Aqui” (throw here) and “Esperame Sentado” (sit while you wait) so be on the lookout for new and exciting ideas.

Great opportunity to see this part of the City that most people never visit. It reminds me of some parts of Baltimore or Williamsburg in Brooklyn .A mix of red bricks, steal, homes, factories and melancholic industrial polluted urban waterway.

CASA FOA provides a free transfer that leaves every half hour from the Colon Theatre (Cerrito and Tucuman) starting at 11:30am.The last transfer leaves back to the Colon at 9 pm.

11TH ANNUAL EXPOTRASTIENDAS

ART FAIR IN BUENOS AIRES

1ST to 5th of September 2011

Art is a very big part of argentine life, in fact, may people say that Buenos Aires is the cultural capital of South America and who am I to argue. The minute you arrive you notice, literally!! Last week I was invited to an art exhibition opening at the airport hallway art space La Paz. Can you believe it, prospective buyers were sipping champagne, mingling and deciding, and all the while jetlagged passengers kept creeping by with their luggage with perplexed looks in their sleepy eyes.

Chez moi, art has always been present. Both my aunt (my photograph is of her painting) Poupee Tessio and my brother Mariano Airaldi are artists, and my mother is their unofficial Theo van Gogh as well as a furnisher restaurateur . As for my father, the ambassador, he is a collector of old photography and is responsible together with my mother for a very interesting collection of argentine paintings. My sister and I are starting collections thanks to the great prices, our aunt´s “donations” and the great talent young talent in Argentina.

11TH ANNUAL EXPOTRASTIENDAS is an art fair organized annually by the Argentine Association of Galleries since 2001. This year´s edition kicks off a new decade for this mega fest of local art.

All the most important galleries in one place for visitors to enjoy and a great opportunity to add an argentine art piece to your collection. A private viewing with our art consultant can be arranged by contacting: www.buenos-aires-experience.com

EXPOTRASTIENDAS is proud to promote talent of all ages, diciplines, and styles. Be it installations, oils, collage, video-art – there are always new surprises and innovations. Ricardo Blanco, president of the National Many of you already know from our Arts & Leisure’s Guide, galleries such as Vassari, Del Infinito, Arte x Arte, Gachi Prieto, Kazuka Sakai, Duillio Pierri among many others.

Victor Grippo, one of Argentina’s most important contemporary artist (some of his works are exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Recoleta), states that “the intention of the artist is to serve society as to reflect yourself and thus understand oneself”.

Works by famed Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro, creator of Casa Pueblo in Punta del Este and father of one of the survivors of the tragedy of the Andes. He defines himself as “Pintor del Medio del Rio” which means something like painter from the middle of the river, The River Plate. You see, he divides his work between Punta Del Este (geographic limit of the River plate) and his atelier in the Delta of Tigre. This is a collection of paintings inspired on the Delta during the past 30 years. As a plus to this true ambassador of Uruguayan-argentine brotherhood, the museum is a former Belle epoch hotel with a marble pier overlooking the brown waters of Tigre. It is walking distance from the train station. Take train from Retiro to Tigre.
